Hall of Fame Coach Randy Myhre to Lead New Women鈥檚 Basketball Program, Megan Johnson Hired as Assistant Coach

Another regional coaching legend is coming out of retirement to help launch a聽 new basketball program at 探花视频. Longtime Barnum Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Randy Myhre has been hired as the new head women鈥檚 basketball coach at LSC.

Myhre coached the Barnum Bombers from 1978-2011, which included an impressive record of聽 626-165, nine trips to the state tournament, and the Class A State Championship in 2010. He was named Minnesota Girls Basketball Association Class A Coach of the Year several times, 聽BreakDown USA Sports Preview 2010 Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. The Minneapolis Star Tribune referred to Myhre as a 鈥減ioneer鈥 in girls basketball in the State of Minnesota upon his retirement in 2012.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to roll up my sleeves and get back to work,鈥 said new LSC women鈥檚 basketball coach Randy Myhre. 鈥淚 look forward to getting to know the campus community and helping launch a successful women鈥檚 basketball program at LSC.鈥

Assisting Myhre will be someone who knows him well, his daughter Megan Johnson. Johnson lives in Superior and has coached in the Superior Basketball League since 2012. She also works as a Leave & Disability Management Specialist at Ascena Corporation in Duluth.

鈥淭his is an exciting opportunity for everyone involved,鈥 said Johnson. 鈥淚t鈥檚 special to be able to coach with my dad and to be part of a new athletic program at 探花视频.鈥

Mike Seymour, Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs and acting Athletic Director at LSC, expressed excitement about starting the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 programs and the positive impact it will have at 探花视频. 鈥淲e have seen an increase in enrollment and school pride with the success of our soccer programs, as now with clay target and the cycling team,鈥 said Seymour. 鈥淎dding basketball will allow us to continue to add to that momentum while giving our students more opportunities to get involved.鈥

探花视频 plans to begin women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 basketball in the fall of 2018, pending a successful student referendum this spring. Hiring coaches now allows time to begin recruiting, as well as prepare schedules and sponsorships.
